Desperate to scare up business for his struggling business, Damien Dickens places an ad in the local paper: "Dickens Detective Agency. We find what you're looking for."
Celine Sutherland is the last person he expected to walk into his office, a copy of the ad in her hand, pleading for his help. When her body is found half-hidden under the Atlantic City boardwalk, his gun and wallet nearby, Damien becomes the prime suspect in her murder.
Deserted by his friends, sought by the police, and haunted by his failure to protect Celine, Damien searches the mean streets of Atlantic City and the tranquil environs of Stowe, Vermont for clues that will reveal Celine's killer and clear his own name.
