"Have you considered my servant Job?" With those six words, from the mouth of God, Job's life was placed in Satan's crosshairs. The results of that spiritual warfare are laid out in stark detail to serve as a lesson for us all.
Job's sore trial teaches us how to pick up the pieces of a broken life. Crippling grief over the loss of his children, bankruptcy, a tortuous disease that crippled his body, coupled with unwelcome advice from supposed friends, and on top of all that, a wife that encouraged him to curse God and die.
Yet, through it all, Job did something extraordinary. Something amazing. Something seemingly impossible. Job gave God glory: "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in him." From the ash heap of a broken life, Job emerged victorious with a deeper understanding of the Lord, and His almighty power, as Satan retreated back into the shadows.
Our lives are not so different from Job's. We have real problems, real losses, real sorrows and the temptation to escape our pain through various means. We have a real enemy seeking to steal, kill and destroy us. But we have a very real God that we can trust, who will give us strength to triumph when all seems hopeless.
