Paris, 1943.Marc Vallorin has spent eighteen years measuring buildings, checking figures, and producing assessments that cannot be questioned. Now the same precision that made him good at his work has made him useful to a system built to take property from people who no longer have the power to keep it.Marc cannot stop the transfers. He cannot undo the orders arriving at his bureau. But valuation is not an exact science, and within every defensible range there is room to choose. So Marc begins choosing the lower end.Every measurement remains accurate. Every comparable is legitimate. Every calculation can survive inspection. One assessment becomes another, then another, until a pattern begins to emerge—one subtle enough to be defensible, but clear enough for his bureau chief to notice. When a regional auditor arrives to examine Marc's files, the question is no longer whether his work is correct. It is whether correctness can conceal intent.Set inside the administrative machinery of occupied Paris, The Assessed Value is a restrained historical novel about complicity, professional conscience, and the small acts of resistance that official records were never designed to preserve. The manuscript explicitly grounds its fictional bureau in the real machinery of forced valuation and transfer of Jewish-owned property during the occupation.
