Heartwarming Appalachian family relationships uphold Gid’s journey to maturity. A lonely boy copes with estrangement from his mother and separation from his imprisoned uncle. He writes his uncle Jeb a series of outlandish letters in hopes of hastening his uncle’s release. Meanwhile, in seeking to solve the mystery of strange happenings in the woods, Gid meets an unlikely friend who helps him with his abandonment issues and provides motivation for Gid to learn and grow.
