When Jim Walters tries to free a girl from her sexually abusive stepfather, he experiences betrayal and becomes accused of a crime that he did not commit. During his attempted escape, he survives a failed attempt at being hung by his accusers, and is washed away and permanently scarred by the strong currents of the Republican River. Assuming a new name and a new identity, Walters rides back into the vice town of Mirage in the hopes of exacting revenge and retribution against the family that wronged him.
