Sarah has just moved back to town after losing her son and husband. It had been her fault, her recklessness from not having her decrepitly old car tuned up after years of mechanics telling her it was a death trap. Her guilt had led her back to the comfort of her hometown where she meets Jack O’Connell, a broody Irish man who moved from his homeland to escape his horrible past. He speaks to no one and little is known about him.
But when Sarah moves in to an apartment complex owned by Jack, he finds himself drawn to her. He understands her pain and craves comfort. They both find themselves drawn to one another and an affair begins. But once they are seen together and rumors fly, their relationship becomes more and more strained.
Jack leaves town without a word, and Sarah finds out she’s pregnant with his child. The guilt and memories overtake her as what she sees as a betrayal to her late husband grows inside her. The town condemns her until she finally leaves, moving back in with her parents. Jack comes back to town only to be slandered again while he begins to move his things. He finds out from an old woman that Sarah was pregnant. He drops everything and searches for her for months.
But what Sarah finds out about Jack's past when he opens up shocks her to the bone.
